CLASS OF 2023

Ang Li Ya is a Singaporean artist currently pursuing her Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. She has exhibited internationally and locally in Flagship Genius Featuring Ayuttthaya IV in 2023, Open Print Exchange in Germany and Japan in 2022, Cook House Exhibition in the United Kingdom in 2022, Moving Plates Exhibition in 2019 and If the World Changed for the Singapore Biennale in 2014. Li Ya graduated with distinction in Diploma in Fine Art in 2021 from NAFA and is also a recipient of the Dean’s List Award each academic years.

Carla Karishma Cantarella is a mixed media artist that explores topics like Mental health (primarily anxiety), human relationships, and invisible labour. Her initial works were photography and video art but her current practice has expanded to include publications as well as installations. Her most recent installation titled “The Visit” was exhibited in a group show, ‘Wake’ at The Substation (2021). Her recent text-based work include: “My Story of Time and Care” which she co-authored during a partnership with NAFA and a local Hospice for an exhibition titled Stories of Care (2021), “The book of intrusive thoughts”, an artist book that consisted of her photography and collected intrusive thoughts (2022); and “The Apartments”, a collaborative publication which discussed topics of parental based trauma and healing (2022). As she continues to explore these topics, she hopes to create more collaborative works.

d’Almeida Ruth Isabelle is a visual artist pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. Ruth explored drawing and printmaking during her diploma years, working primarily with 2D mediums such as ink and paint, and dabbles in themes pertaining to the self and human nature. She has presented her works in various exhibitions such as, ESCAPE TO: a SOTA curatorial project exhibition 2023, Drawing the Border of Water Exhibition, dblspce 2021, Moving Plates Exhibition, Mulan Gallery 2021.

Evangeline Electra is pursuing her Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. As a multidisciplinary artist, she expands her interest in installation and publication. She has presented her work locally and internationally throughout her artistic practice; Downsizing, Dblspace x Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts ( NAFA) x University of the Arts London (UAL), Singapore in 2022, Flagship Genius and Ayutthaya IV, The Ngee Ann Kongsi Galleries Galleries 1 & 2, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts ( NAFA), Singapore in 2022 and Group Showcase Year 2 NAFAxUAL Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Fine Art at Cookhouse, Chelsea College of Arts & Design, University of the Arts London, United Kingdom in 2022. Evangeline also taught art in an art institution and studio as an art instructor for several years while increasing her interest and experiments in various art scenes.

Farisah Shafiee is currently pursuing her Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. As a multidisciplinary artist, she mainly creates installation works that deliver a participatory approach. She has been involved in various art events and public showcases for the Singapore Art Week (2021), as part of the Public Art Trust team managed by the National Arts Council. She has worked closely with local artists for the showcase of ‘Rewritten: The World Ahead Of Us’ (2021). Her participatory work titled ‘Feel The Presence’ (2021); has been selected as the ‘Future-Ready Changemakers’ organised by The Straits Times. Farisah’s installation work titled ‘Epoch’ (2020); constructed by gathering historical stories of the Vanguard Building in Stamford Road was shortlisted as the top 10 best live client open call projects for the Singapore Night Festival (2020).

Jassilyn Ng Jia Ling practices in the intersections of artmaking and arts managing. She is currently pursuing her Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London, Singapore. She has presented her works at Escape To: Exhibition in 2023 at SOTA Gallery and downsizing in 2023 at dblspce where she was involved in the curatorial and logistics of the exhibition. She has also exhibited at Wake in 2021 at The Substation as a group show with her NAFA cohort mates. In the graduating year of her Diploma in Fine Arts in 2021, she received the Woon Brothers Foundation Commendation Prize.

Shuchita Kapur is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. She recently spent 2 months in London studying at the University of Arts London as part of her course's International Placement Programme where her project was exhibited at The Cookhouse on campus. Prior to this, she received her Diploma in Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts where she specialised in the 4D discipline encompassing digital photography, performance, sound and video art. Her work 'Respond to Equality' has been featured in the NAFA publication 'Oblique'. Over the course of her stay in Singapore, she has immersed herself into the work culture by having held multiple roles such as gallery assistant, art teacher, creative intern (Kolkata Centre for Creativity, India and The Artling, Singapore) and an associate of the marketing department (YouthHarmony, Singapore). Such a varied resume has helped her gain a number of skills that are pertinent to the industry.

Kysha Ashreen is a multi-disciplinary artist who's main practice lies in performance. While pursuing a Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London, she not only displayed work but also curated and managed exhibitions for the pioneer batch of Degree students. She has exhibited works that employs various mediums across reknowed art spaces in Singapore such as Substation, dblspce, and P7:1SMA. She is also the recepient of the Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship and the Choo Lim Study Award. Having experienced the art scene in London, Paris and Singapore, Kysha uncovers moral questions through a Southeast Asian context using Western methods of artmaking.

Lauryn Beth Fernandez is a Singaporean artist currently pursuing a Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. Her artistic practice explores themes of identity and mental health, where each medium of painting and writing often serve as an extension of the other. Her work has been showcased in noteworthy exhibitions, including 'Flagship Genius featuring Ayutthaya' at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, 2023 and 'New Now V: Toward Unlearning' at Gajah Gallery Singapore, 2021. Lauryn has also been a recipient of awards such as the SINDA Excellence Award and NAFA Scholarship.

Nuraishah Rashid is an artist and educator whose passions derive from the intersections of play and research. She received a Diploma in Art Teaching from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and will graduate with a Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. Nuraishah has extensive experience in teaching art children from elementary to secondary level. As an artist and aspiring filmmaker, Nuraishah taps into her childhood and mixed heritage and explores them through various mediums from sculpture to film-based works. She recently completed an art residency at Studio Plesungan, ran by artist Melati Suryodarmo, where she produced her first short film, Leluhurku.

Sarah Kwek is a Singapore-based artist who is currently pursuing her Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. Sarah has exhibited her works at various exhibitions and shows - “Downsizing” at DBLSPCE 2023, NAFA Open House 2023, UAL Cook House Exhibition show in the United Kingdom 2022, a public showcase for NAFA “Introduction to Experimental Drawing” and “Stories of Care” at Assisi Hospice 2021. She graduated from Diploma in Fine Art with distinction and was awarded the Dean’s List Award throughout her Diploma years together with the Tan Chay Bing Award 2019, Best Studentship prize 2021 and Most Resilience Award 2021. Most recently, she was also awarded the Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship Award (AY 2021/ 2022 / 2023).

Sim Jia Ning is a promising artist and educator who is committed to making art more accessible to the public. Jia Ning is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts validated by University of the Arts London. Prior to this, she graduated with a Diploma in Art Teaching from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Her artworks have been showcased in various exhibitions include "Downsizing" at dblspce, 'NAFA Open House Degree Showcase 2022 and 2023', 'Stories of Care' at Assisi Hospice in 2021, 'UNCOVERED: Waterloo Street Collective Collaboration 2021', 'NAFA Grad Expectations 2021'.

Syahmin Huda is a Singaporean artist currently pursuing a Bachelors of Arts (Honours) Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of the Arts London. Her works pivot around themes of culture, transformation and the immaterial. She was a runner-up for the National Heritage Board’s open call for Singapore Night Festival (2020). Her works have been exhibited under the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art SOAD showcase (2021) and Downsizing: A Public Showcase supported by Nanyang Academy of Fine Art x University of the Arts London & dblspce (2023). She also previously served as an artist assistant to Singaporean artist, Melissa Tan.

Jalon Tan is a Singaporean visual artist. His works 'I'mmortal' (2016), 'Hi' - I'mmortal series 2 (2017) and 'Ye ye' (2023) reflect on various transitions in his life, including career, family, spirituality, and personal identity. An affinity for animal subjects can be seen in his interactive installations for the 'PAWsitive Exhibition' (2017) and sculptural work commissioned for ASUS's product launch exhibition (2018). In addition, 'Purretty Paints' (2015), a solo exhibition with 16 paintings depecting cats. Also a skilled figurative painter, Jalon designs art curriculums and teaches painting in his home studio and local institutions.

Xie Yihong @ Xie Oscar is a Singapore based artist known for his abstract Chinese ink paintings. His first contemporary ink painting was chosen to exhibit in “Perceptions 感知: Chinese Ink at NAFA”, 2018. Subsequently, his signature style abstract painting was exhibited in “Explorations 探索: Chinese Ink at NAFA” in 2019. Since returning from his National Service, Xyh held a group art show “PA3otic” in Crane (Arab Street) featuring his latest abstract explorations, and another group show right after, “Baisheng Church Art Exhibition”, showcasing his traditional Chinese painting works, both in 2022.
